How often will the club have events?
Our goal is once every 4-6 weeks, minimum. There may be more events in that time frame depending on what else is going on in the community, such as exhibits or festivals. Check the News & Events for upcoming Event info. Event info can also be found on Facebook.
Is there a membership fee?
There is currently no fee to join the club. However, if events have associated fees (such as a coffee/dinner/entrance fee, etc), those are to be paid by the individual attending. Some workshops, such as a kimono wearing workshop, may have fees, which would be used to cover the rental cost of the space. The club is non-profit.
Do I have to be Japanese, or speak Japanese, to be a member?
No! Neither founder is Japanese. :) And while having some knowledge of kimono vocabulary (Japanese or English) is helpful for discussions, speaking Japanese not necessary.
What if I don't know how to wear kimono?
That's okay! We plan on having kimono wearing workshops to teach others to wear kimono. We welcome all levels of skill to the events, and we can assist people in dressing if required. You CAN attend events without being dressed in kimono if you would like to, and we encourage it. Haori with Western clothing is welcomed and super cute! We realize not everyone is comfortable in full kitsuke or has all the necessary items, and we're aware that some people just want to hang out with people who have similar interests, so we welcome you all.
What is "Kimono de Jack"? Are you part of that movement?
You can read more about the history of "Kimono de Jack" here. "Kimono de Jack" was started in Kyoto when a group of people wanted to wear kimono more often as their daily lives didn't allow for it. The idea is sort of like flash-mob in kimono, with the word spread through Twitter. Kimono de Jack events are free and people are welcome to come and go as they like. The events are now held throughout Japan and in other countries, including the UK. See the UK Kimono de Jack homepage here. This club is basically striving for the same idea - to increase the number of events to wear kimono to in our daily lives.
Do you do a link exchange?
If your website is related to wearing kimono, kimono history, or Japanese culture, we'd be happy to do a link exchange with you. Contact us with your website information and we'll see if it suits the main idea of the club. At this point, we may add personal blogs if the content is at least 90% kimono or Japanese culture related. If linking to the TKC, please link to the 'home' page.
Do you accept donations or sponsorship?
If you have items pertaining to kimono or Japanese culture and are looking for a good home for them, we can give them a loving home. Items would be used to teach others about kimono and Japanese culture.
Event space rental is our biggest expense and barrier to holding more hands-on events, such as kitsuke lessons, accessories making workshops, obi musubi workshops, and more. If you are interested in donating either monetarily or by offering space, please do not hesitate to let us know. We will put any monies received toward covering costs of: a) an event, divided between all those who attend, b) paying for special lecturers, or c) room rental to hold kimono wearing (kitsuke) lessons and workshops. If you have a purpose in mind when you donate, please let us know. We apologize that we cannot provide any sort of receipt for tax purposes. You can contact us for an address if you'd like to send a cheque, or you can use the donate button below.
If you are a company representative and would like to sponsor an outing or event at your location, please email us and provide more information about what you have in mind and we will get back to you. Alternately, if you are able to provide a space large enough for some of these types of events, please let us know as we'd be thrilled to hear from you.
